What Is Plantar Fibromatosis?

Plantar fibromatosis is a fancy word for having a lump under the skin on the sole of your foot, usually right beneath the arch. The growth, called a fibroma or nodule, can be an inch in diameter. You may have one nodule or a cluster of nodules, which are considered to be benign. However, after a period of time plantar fibromatosis may begin to cause foot arch pain when you are standing and stiffness in the toes. Causes of plantar fibromatosis include heredity, long-term alcohol consumption, and repetitive foot trauma. Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, liver disease, and epilepsy are believed to put you at further risk for developing plantar fibromatosis. In general, it is more common among men than women. A podiatrist can perform an MRI to determine the severity of the fibroma and offer a variety of treatment options. Among them are corticosteroid injections, custom orthotics, and surgery.

What Is Turf Toe?

Metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joints connect the long metatarsal bones in the forefoot with the proximal phalanges which form at the base of the toes. Athletes such as football players, soccer players, dancers, basketball players, and gymnasts can place excessive force on the MTP joints by repeatedly pushing off and flexing the big toe on harder, artificial surfaces, by changing direction abruptly, or stopping and starting frequently. This constant type of action can cause the ligament under the big toe to hyperextend and lead to an MTP joint sprain in the big toe, commonly referred to as turf toe. Turf toe symptoms include pain, swelling, instability, stiffness, and limited movement in the big toe that worsens when you put pressure on it or extend it. Turf toe can develop over time or may be the result of a sudden injury—at which point a popping sensation may be felt. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms described here, it is  wise to schedule an appointment with a podiatrist to be properly diagnosed and treated.

Ankle and foot injuries are common among athletes and in many sports. They can be caused by several problems and may be potentially serious. If you are feeling pain or think you were injured in a sporting event or when exercising, consult with Gary Cockrell, DPM from Tennessee. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Common Injuries

The most common injuries that occur in sporting activities include:

  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains
  • Broken Foot
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Stress Fractures
  • Turf Toe

Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending upon the injury and in some cases, there may be no symptoms at all. However, in most cases, some form of symptom is experienced. Pain, aching, burning, bruising, tenderness, tightness or stiffness, sensation loss, difficulty moving, and swelling are the most common symptoms.

Treatment

Just as symptoms vary depending upon the injury, so do treatment options. A common treatment method is known as the RICE method. This method involves rest, applying ice, compression and elevating the afflicted foot or ankle. If the injury appears to be more serious, surgery might be required, such as arthroscopic or reconstructive surgery. Lastly, rehabilitation or therapy might be needed to gain full functionality in the afflicted area. Any discomfort experienced by an athlete must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

Does My Ankle Fracture Need Surgery?

An ankle fracture can happen from suddenly twisting your ankle. This can happen from falling, or possibly from stepping off of a curb unexpectedly. The ankle ligaments may be affected, and surgery may be needed for permanent repair. A surgical benefit can consist of putting the bones back together in proper formation for proper healing. When this is done correctly, treatment can begin by using a walker or cast. During ankle surgery, the broken bones will be exposed on the inner and outside of the ankle. Screws and plates may be used to permanently hold the bones together, and  can generally take several weeks to recover. After an appropriate time has passed, it is beneficial to perform specific exercises that can help to strengthen the ankle after surgery. Recovery typically begins with resting the affected ankle on a pillow, and it may help to keep it elevated which can diminish existing swelling. If you have broken your ankle, it is strongly suggested that you contact a podiatrist who can offer you correct treatment options, which may include surgery.

Foot surgery is sometimes necessary to treat a foot ailment. To learn more, contact Gary Cockrell, DPM of Tennessee. Our doctor will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

When Is Surgery Necessary?

Foot and ankle surgery is generally reserved for cases in which less invasive, conservative procedures have failed to alleviate the problem. Some of the cases in which surgery may be necessary include:

  • Removing foot deformities like bunions and bone spurs
  • Severe arthritis that has caused bone issues
  • Cosmetic reconstruction

What Types of Surgery Are There?

The type of surgery you receive will depend on the nature of the problem you have. Some of the possible surgeries include:

  • Bunionectomy for painful bunions
  • Surgical fusion for realignment of bones
  • Neuropathy decompression surgery to treat nerve damage

Benefits of Surgery

Although surgery is usually a last resort, it can provide more complete pain relief compared to non-surgical methods and may allow you to finally resume full activity.

Surgical techniques have also become increasingly sophisticated. Techniques like endoscopic surgery allow for smaller incisions and faster recovery times.
